What is It and What is Its Value?

Often a piece of jewelry is admired and worn, but the wearer is unsure of its style, whether the gemstones are genuine, and if it holds a special place in history. Is it Victorian or Art Deco? Is it a highly collectible designer piece or a mass-produced ring, bracelet or necklace?

Many people wonder what their fine jewelry items are worth in today’s marketplace. And once a value is ascertained, how might one go about selling their jewelry. It’s not as complicated as it might seem – Your Jewelry Appraiser helps people around the country figure out what they have and where they might get the most for their heirlooms, personal collections or that engagement ring that is no longer worn.

We offer an easy, three-step process to determine approximate fair market values on your pieces and introduce you to sources where you can sell your items for a fair price.

After scheduling an on-line video call, please take the following steps:

  • Choose the item you wish to be examined and gather any paperwork, gemological reports, receipts, etc. in connection with the piece and have it available for the call.

  • Take a look yourself to find any marks on the inside of your ring, on the clasp of the necklace or the interior of the brooch. Look for marks like 750, 585, 18K, 14K, Sterling, an eagle’s head, or any manufacturer’s marks, such as Cartier, Tiffany or VCA. Write any markings you find down before the call.

  • Once the item has been assessed, you will receive a verbal fair market valuation based on recent sales for similar pieces. You will also receive by email recommendations on where to sell your jewelry. After 20 years in the antique and estate fine jewelry business, Gretchen has a network of trusted dealers she is happy to recommend.

At the end of the call, you will have an idea of what your jewelry is and is not, and an estimate of what you might expect should you decide to sell. Of course, only a hands-on appraisal can allow for metal and gemstone testing, but a Valuation Call with Gretchen will get you pointed in the right direction and connect you with industry specialists.

Please note: valuations provided on these calls are estimates only and in no way constitute a Fine Jewelry Appraisal Report. Any recommendations of sellers, dealers and/or selling platforms are only suggestions and in no way guarantee a sale, nor is compensation received by Your Jewelry Appraiser unless explicitly disclosed.
